This expresses Holden's strong dislike for the movies, but also shows what he thinks makes a person phony. During his date with Sally he expresses how he hates material things in the world. That's one reason why he hates the movies so much. He doesn't like the lady in the movies so much because he thought the movie was very stupid and pointless and he thought it was very funny that someone would cry because about it. Movies are the definition of phony to Holden, and anyone that cries over a movie as bad as that one is especially phony to him.
It seems as if everything to Holden is fake or a phony! It seems Holden doesn't like movies very much because he sees it as the people in the movies aren't acting like themselves but pretending to be someone else. Or in Holden's words, they are being phonies.
ReplyDeleteA agree completely with Rid. Holden practically thinks everything is phony. Seriously, on every other page it seems like Holden is saying that something is phony, but is Holden himself also being phony? He talks about people in the movies not acting like themselves being phony, but Holden does that all the time!!! I think Holden is a little phony. He lies about who he is all the time and makes up stuff about himself on several occasions.
